On February 24, 1978, five young men from Yuba City (Gary Mathias, Jack Madruga, Ted Weiher, Jack Huett, and Bill Sterling) ​stopped at a local market for snacks before beginning the 50-mile drive home.

They never arrived.

They instead drove up a remote, snow-clogged road in the Sierra Nevada's after attending a college basketball game, they drove into the heart of a winter storm in the Plumas National Forest.

They weren't dressed for the cold, their car wasn't equipped for the snow, and their destination was in the opposite direction.

What followed is the American "Dyatlov Pass"— they abandoned their functional car and walked into a sub-zero mountain forest a mystery of inexplicable choices and a silent trailer in the woods.

The Operational Vehicle: The Mercury Montego was found completely undamaged, with a quarter-tank of gas, and zero signs of being stuck. The keys were gone, but the engine started immediately when jumped by police. ​

The Forest Service Trailer: Five months later, the frozen body of Ted Weiher was found inside a remote Forest Service trailer, 19 miles from the car. He had lived for an estimated 8 to 13 weeks in the dark, losing over 80 pounds and dying of starvation and hypothermia. ​
